Abstract

Ethnobotanical knowledge has been an integral part of indigenous cultures for generations, offering insights into the traditional uses of plants for medicinal purposes. The Philippines, known for its diverse flora and rich cultural heritage, presents a unique opportunity to explore the potential of traditional Filipino plants in the treatment of chronic diseases. This study conducts comprehensive ethnobotanical research to document and validate the traditional knowledge of Filipino herbalists and healers regarding the management of chronic diseases. The urgency of this research stems from the rising global prevalence of chronic diseases, which include diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Chronic diseases have become a significant public health concern, leading to a substantial burden on healthcare systems. Traditional medicine, with its holistic approach, offers a promising avenue for addressing chronic diseases and reducing healthcare costs. This study builds on prior ethnobotanical research by focusing on chronic diseases, conducting phytochemical analyses to identify bioactive compounds, and evaluating the pharmacological properties of selected plants. Additionally, clinical trials or experimental studies are employed to assess the safety and efficacy of traditional plant-based interventions. By integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific validation, this research seeks to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine. The objectives of this study include systematic documentation of traditional Filipino plants used in chronic disease management, identification of potential lead compounds for drug development, and the development of evidence-based herbal therapies. Furthermore, this research empowers traditional healers and herbalists by validating their practices and encourages the integration of traditional medicine into modern healthcare practices. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the preservation of traditional knowledge, the development of new therapeutic options, and improved access to healthcare for chronic disease management. This research underscores the potential of traditional Filipino plants in the global context of chronic disease treatment, fostering a deeper understanding of the synergy between traditional wisdom and modern science.
